State of Vermont Restitution Unit
The State of Vermont Restitution Unit and Restitution Special Fund was created by the Vermont legislature on July 1, 2004 to address the financial hardship caused to crime victims waiting for an offender to pay restitution. Restitution Order enforcement, collection and Special Fund administration is done by the Restitution Unit. Restitution ordered on behalf of an individual victim on or after July 1, 2004 may be advanced to the victim from the Restitution Special Fund if their loss is fund eligible and can be documented. Advance payment from the Restitution Special Fund is capped at $5,000.00. Restitution ordered to an individual over the $5,000 cap, or to a business, State Agency, or for a loss not eligible for advance from the Restitution Special Fund will be paid to the victim as the Restitution Unit is able to collect from the offender.
